Three stars on an Alan Moore book is at least 4 on any other. Perhaps not fair, but I think Promethea is not up to Watchman. And yes that is like expecting a batter to hit a homer every time. The art throughout is lush, layered and dazing. This gets to be a problem because with Moore one can expect artistic details to come back later. Except in this case it is more overwhelming than illustrative. Sometimes simple is better. Compare for example the restraint in the first four pages and the hyper detail in too many of the rest of the panels. This is an origins story. Promethea is an imagined super heroine based on the mention of a minor figure in and older myth. As a superhero she has, in the reader’s reality, a history across several real artists and poets. All of the actual history is initially documented in the finely written introduction and then woven into the particulars of how our Promethea takes a nerdy college girl from the near future into a just armored enough super hero for today. This entails walking us through each of the previous Prometheas as they attempt to impart their particular wisdom into this book’s newbie. This brings me to the plot problem. Newly minted Promethea seems to know everything she needs to know when she needs it , unless a sudden lack of knowledge allows her older selves to impart their version of semi impenetrable sage knowledge.Shades of Grasshopper and Kung Fu Master. And know the ancient wisdom she must because Newbie Promethea arrives fully formed and half trained in the middle of cue the Dun Dun DUN! Threat to the real and imagined world. OR Fairy Land or Never-Never land or o yeah it is called Immateria. It is imagination driven which is nice because Promethea is Imagination. Well as formulas go -not at all bad.Moore has a lot of fun doing cross overs. His own version of the Fantastic Four here the Five Swell Guys. One of whom has psychic powers, gonna guess we will need them. And into the woods we will find an updated Little Red Ridding Hood and for sure there is a Big Bad Wolf and so forth. All nicely done with a mix of a twinkling eye of humor, honor for the old traditions and classic Moore twists. My bottom line is that if this book were all I know of Alan Moore I would be tempted to stop here. Another dystopian future more magic creatures based on the ancients and a lot of what are standard modern retelling of myths. I retain my faith in Mr. Moore and book 2 is already in hand. What starts out as a tale following a mythical character named Promethea becomes one of the most fun rides through alchemy, Kaballah, tarot, astrology, and all of the mystic arts combined. Joseph Campbell's mono-myth theory, that all mythological stories are essentially the same story, is delivered in a way that reveals itself anew in each issue, which is in such a radically different style from all the previous issues that that makes you appreciate the incredible versatility of artist J Williams III. I've reread the entire series several times, and always something new is revealed.
